KDI Review of the North Korean Economy for May carries an article titled “North Korean Economy in 2020, a ‘Deja Vu’ of the 1994 Crisis?” contributed by Suk Lee, a senior fellow at KDI. In his study, based on some limited data available, Lee estimates the trends of the North Korean economy in 2020 from a macroeconomic perspective. The analysis compares the current situation with that in 1994 when an economic crisis began in North Korea. In doing so, Lee addresses an underlying dilemma the economy is confronting now and discusses what it implies.
