KDI Review of the North Korean Economy for July presents three trend analysis articles and summarizes discussions presented in the North Korean Economic Research Forum held under the title “North Korean Economy Study and Improvements of KDI Review of the North Korean Economy.”

On June 5, 2020, the KDI Office of the North Korean Economics Studies held an advisory conference for the first half of 2020, attended by external editorial advisors. Participants exchanged opinions regarding the current status and trends of the studies of the North Korean economy and discussed on the direction of the journals related to this field of study, particularly ideas to improve the KDI Review.

In “North Korean Economy and Residents' Health,” author looks into how the recent deepening economic crisis affects the health of North Koreans by linking the current economic situation and public health conditions from a macro perspective. “Transition from ‘Korean Ethnic-race Firstism’ to ‘Nation Firstism’: Meaning and Prospect of ‘Nation Firstism’” introduces the background and contents of the new strategy and forecasts the future direction of internal and external policies. Lastly, reflecting the current rend of growing women’s participation in the labor market, “North Korean Women's Labor and Occupation in the Kim Jong Un Era” looks into the gender division of labor and gender discrimination structure observed in the official labor sectors of the North Korean economy. Also, based on the oral statements by North Korean women who defected recently, the article analyzes the aspects and characteristics of North Korean women's job selection and labor in the official sector.
