■ 최근 우리 경제는 코로나19가 확산됨에 따라 경기 전반이 위축되고 있음.

○ 1월에는 설 명절 이동에 따른 조업일수 감소를 감안할 경우 생산 증가세가 전월과 유사한 수준을 보인 가운데 경기 동행지수와 선행지수도 소폭 상승하는 등 경기 부진이 완화되고 있었음.

○ 그러나 코로나19의 영향이 본격화된 2월에는 수출이 중국을 중심으로 부진하였으며, 내수도 경제심리 악화로 위축되고 있는 것으로 판단됨.

- 중국 수요가 둔화되고 중국산 부품의 수급 차질로 자동차생산도 축소되면서 2월 일평균 수출이 크게 감소한 가운데, 세계경제 성장률 전망치가 하향 조정되는 등 대외 여건도 악화되는 모습

- 소비자심리지수와 기업경기실사지수가 급락하면서 코로나19의 부정적인 영향이 내수에도 파급되고 있음을 시사

- 금융시장에서도 향후 경기 부진에 대한 우려가 반영되면서 주가와 원화가치가 하락하고 변동성이 확대됨.

■ The Korean economy is slowing down overall due to the spread of COVID-19.

○ January’s production growth was similar to the previous month, taking into account the fewer workdays—the influence from the early arrival of the Lunar New Year holidays. The cyclical components of both coincident and leading composite indices exhibited a slight increase, implying that the slowdown was easing.

○ In February, however, exports turned sluggish, mainly to China, as the COVID-19 outbreak began to snowball while domestic demand also appears to be weakening due to deteriorating economic sentiment.

- February’s average exports per workday plunged as the export demand from China slackened and the production of automobiles contracted due to disruptions in China’s parts supply. Also, global growth forecasts were revised downward, indicating a deterioration in the external environment.

- The CCSI and BSI plummeted, implying that the COVID-19 outbreak is taking a toll on domestic demand.

- Stock prices and the won depreciated reflecting concerns about the economic slowdown.
