Analysis and Forecast of Macroeconomic Trends (yearly task)

- The institute conducts frequent checkups of macroeconomic trends, evaluates policy keynotes based on these, and seeks to provide macroeconomic policy directions to bring about stable growth and economic balance.
- The institute provides policymakers and other economic players with basic data for establishing macroeconomic policies and economic activity plans by helping to enhance their economic forecasting capacity, and contributes to finding policy alternatives by detecting the economy's structural changes or weaknesses in their early stages.

- Compared to other countries, Korean household???s asset portfolio composition is heavily dependent on real estate (80%) and savings???most of their financial resources are savings or deposit for house rentals. There is a need to probe the meaning and implications of this trend in the course of a long-term growth of national economy.

Economic Approach to Premium for Occupancy

- The theoretical analysis attempted by this study according to the type of premium shows that equipment and facility investment, in particular, could be significantly affected by incentive system of protecting the premium. This result is presented through static and dynamic theory model and then this study provides the most appropriate alternative by analyzing institutional guarantee measures for the retrieval of the premium through a theoretical model.

KDI-EWC Joint Research (yearly task)

- KDI and U.S.-based Asian economics research organization the East-West Center conduct joint research on key issues in the Korean economy. The joint program listens to opinions of both scholars at home and abroad and world's renowned experts and promotes the capacity-building of KDI through exchanging study results.

Other than the principle research projects already approved in 2011, KDI also plans to select timely and meaningful policy research projects and promote them so as to flexibly respond to the research demand which could be brought by changes in study environment or policy needs during the remaining period of 2011.

02 Research-related Programs
1) Economic Education and Information Projects
- Economic education project for schools is designed to provide the youth, future economic leader, with economic knowledge necessary for reasonable decision making and economic activities so as to help them contribute to improving the national competitiveness as well as their own life when they enter the society.

- Economic information project aims to not only enhance the public understanding of economy but also offer direct and indirect assistance to economic policy legislation and corporate and research activities by systematically collecting, classifying, and analyzing various domestic and foreign economic information, processing them into knowledge sources, and promptly providing them with users.
2) Joint Research and Cooperation Project with Int'l Organizations
- Identifies strategic higher national priority tasks, and conducts joint research with world's renowned research and academic organizations. It also hosts international symposiums so as to promote expansion of the research field into the global stage.

- Helps develop solutions to and build social consensus on key issues by reinforcing policy research capabilities that match the global and knowledge economy era; systematically and preemptively responding to national core policy tasks in the mid and long term; and building research networks among local and international experts and with international organizations.

- Accelerates adoption of programs from more experienced industrialized countries and elevation of local institutions to the global level by reinforcing policy consulting and research exchanges with major international organizations such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) so as to help the government boost institutional capital, and the economy join the industrialized states.
3) Academic and Information Exchanges
- Establishes an organic knowledge cooperation system by activating an economic forum comprising of experts from academic, research and business organizations and government officials so as to effectively conduct policy research on a variety of issues in the fast-changing economic environment.
4) Inter-Korean Economic Cooperation Trends and Research Council
- Establishes a research knowledge and cooperation system for North Korean economy by maintaining an open channel of information and opinion exchanges on Inter-Korean economic issues, cooperation programs, integration and Northeast Asian economic cooperation drives among experts from the government and academic and research organizations.
5) Knowledge Sharing Program
- Provides visiting and learning programs with developing countries or former socialist regions so as to help them enhance their understanding on the principle of market economy, strengthen their economic capacity, and formulate favorable attitude toward Korea
6)Joint Project with World Bank Institute
- Share Korea???s development experience with member nations according to the agreement of the World Bank Institute

03 Research Support Programs
1) Development and operation of computer systems
- Support for general and digital operations including development, operation and management of computer systems used to build databases, collect and compile statistical data, support research and administration within the organization, operate research programs, and repair and maintain computer equipments
2) Management of book data and provision of information
- Collects, sorts and manages economy-related book data in and outside the institute, and provide them (book, research paper, digital data) to outside researchers and users at the institute.
3) Research planning
- Holds seminars at each research stage for effective planning, selecting, and managing research projects, establishes/operates related committees, and promotes close cooperation among concerned ministries and organizations.

03 Private Investment Supporting Projects
- Aims to contribute to an effective execution of budget by supporting the competent authority with works related to the review (including VfM), assessment, concession agreement, financial analysis and negotiation related to refinancing of private investment projects?which are implemented on the basis of the Act on Private participation in Infrastructure (PPP Act)

- Contents of Project
  • Study projects: Studies on improving the system to reduce overall project duration and resolving disputed issues for more effective project implementation, such as by preparing guidelines for small-sized VfM tests

- The market economy and global economy specialized project aims to nurture economic agent???s capability for reasonable economic activity and adaptation to the global economy by delivering the importance of the market economy and the rapidly changing conditions of the global economy through video and print media.

05 Korean Economy???s New Paradigm for Sustaining Development and Integration
- With the restructuring of the global economy and changes in the economy order, the coming decade is likely to be a critical period for Korea???s long-term destiny, and therefore it is necessary to come up with preemptive measures to set a medium- and long-term direction of Korea???s economic policy.

- Now is the time to review the economic philosophy, the government???s role, and the national development strategy that had led Korea???s remarkable economic growth for the past five decades and then to define the Korean economy???s new paradigm to led the future development and unity.

06 Cooperation for International Development
- Conducts policy researches to prepare for the quality and quantity expansion of Korea???s ODA and KSP projects, develops a Korean-version business model for development cooperation through systemizing contents related to development experiences, and establishes a foundation to effectively implement the projects for international cooperation

10 Capacity Building Project for Real Estate Policy Research
- Currently, there is no institute in Korea that provides comprehensive feedbacks on the real estate policy from the perspective of supply, taxation, and finance. So, the Korea Development Institute (KDI) has its team organized for studying real estate and implements studies on policy direction, including the real estate market forecast, taxation, finance, and supply based on the consideration of the real estate supply and demand and macroeconomic conditions.

11 Korean Economy: Development to the Present and Korea???s Status and Role in the Future Global Economy
- Analyzes the changes in the global economic order during the said period, policies as Korea???s responses to the changes, and the appropriateness of the responses so as to enhance the public???s understanding of and awareness on the future of the Korean economy.

- Leads the implementation and evaluation of the official development assistance (ODA) projects so as to build the foundation to set up a ???Korean version of assistance model??? as well as to provide concrete solutions to problems faced by developing countries

- Further expands/develops the ongoing project, ???Making Reform Happen (MRH),??? jointly promoted by KDI and OECD, into a policy consultative project of ODA, particularly for improving the reform capability of developing countries

- Improves the acceptability and effect of the knowledge sharing project by generalizing Korea???s economic growth experience through empirical analysis of its economic growth and then by providing adequate policy guidelines needed for each stage of economic growth

15 Documentation Project for the Sixty Years of the Korea???s Economic and Social Development: Testimony from Veterans
- Documents vivid experiences of senior experts who had played a leading role in Korea???s economic and social growth for the past six decades so as to share and reflect on their achievements with as many people as possible, which furthermore could be of significant use to the government???s knowledge sharing projects

- Upgrades the security of internal resources and data by strengthening the management of removable storage media

17 Measures to Ensure Economic Soundness by Fortifying the Middle Class
- The global financial crisis has shed light on the importance of a series of problems, such as declining economic vitality, prolonged stagnation in employment, shrinking middle class, growing poor class, prolonged unemployment, disintegrating families, increasing subsistence crime, and rising class conflicts.

- Develops policies to continually expand the existing social safety net for protecting the poor class, seeks measures to help the poor enter the middle class and to prevent the existing middle class from falling into the poor, and contributes to developing the government policy for fostering the future middle class
- Ensures effective safety management and creates research-friendly environments through maintenance and repair services for the obsolete building-aged over 30 years.
