[News] KDI Honored as “Center of Excellence” in Two TTCSP Categories

January 30, 2020

Korea Development Institute (KDI) ranked 6th among non-US think tanks and 19th among those including the US from a panel of 8,248 institutes in the 2019 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania.

Starting in 2019, TTCSP is awarding institutes that rank number one in a category for three consecutive years the title of ‘Center of Excellence' in order to honor their accomplishments. KDI has held the first position in the Top Think Tank in Asia (China, India, Japan and Korea) for six consecutive years and International Development category for three consecutive years.

KDI is the only Asian think tank to receive the nomination in two separate categories among 15 institutes that received the recognition in 2019.

In particular, KDI’s research monograph, Population Aging and Economic Growth, written by KDI senior fellow Jaejoon Lee, was selected as the Best Policy Study·Report by a Think Tank, and is the only Korean research paper in this category.

The TTCSP, led by University of Pennsylvania professor James G. McGann, has released an annual comprehensive ranking of global think tanks since 2006 based on compiled data from the recommendations and online surveys of scholars, policymakers, journalists and field experts from around the world, and expert panel evaluation results.

A total of 3,974 experts from various fields evaluated 8,248 think tanks worldwide, taking into consideration various aspects including the level of the researchers, social status, dissemination of research results, reflection in policy, institutional leadership, number of seminars hosted, citation in media and academic journals, and financial stability.

KDI President Jeong Pyo Choi revealed that “As a major national intellectual asset, KDI has legitimately positioned itself as a full-fledged global think tank ahead of its 50th anniversary in 2021.” He added that “KDI will put in every effort to fulfil its epochal mission as a global hub for policy research by  producing research results that can drive the shift to a new paradigm and strengthening joint research endeavors and networks with other leading global institutes.”
