On May 17, 2019, the KDI Office of the North Korean Economics Studies held the North Korean Economic Research Forum, under the title, “North Korean Economic Changes in the Kim Jong Un era and Policy Implications,” in efforts to get a better view of how the North Korean economy under Kim Jong Un has changed in fundamental ways and also to project future movements. A brief summary of what they discussed is carried in the May issue with consent from participants.

The May issue contains two research papers on trend analysis.

“Trump Administration’s North Korean Policy Characteristics and Prospects” tracks the history of the US’ diplomatic policy stance and then focuses on the characteristics of the Trump administration’s policy on North Korea.

“Inter-Korean S&T Cooperation for Win-Win under the New Peninsula Regime” looks into achievements, limitations and problems in inter-Korean S&T cooperation and analyzes North Korea’s S&T-centered policy trends. Based on the result, author also discussed on how to promote S&T cooperation between two Koreas as a win-win strategy for the peninsula.

Providing Economic Forecast and Macroeconomic Policy Direction, the Groundwork for a Brighter Future

The Department of Macroeconomics is conducting researches on the macro economy and macroeconomic policy, particularly focusing on suggesting the analysis of macroeconomic trends and current status of the economy at home and abroad, the economic forecast, and the policy direction of the macro economy. The Department is also in charge of establishing, sustaining and maintaining various econometric models, based on which it analyses policy effects and develops a long-term economic forecast.

  • Basic structural analysis on macroeconomic areas
  • Maintenance of multi-sectoral dynamic macroeconomic model
