On August 14, 2020, the KDI Office of the North Korean Economics Studies held the North Korean Economic Research Forum with US experts in the fields of politics, diplomacy, and security. They shared various opinions on the US national strategy related to the conflict between the US and China.

Trends and Analysis section features two articles. In ‘The Prospects of US-China Hegemony Competition and Korea’s Response in the Post-Covid 19 Era,’ the author talks about the stance Korea should take between the two countries if their strategic competition worsens. It says that Korea needs to avoid hasty decision of taking sides, given that conflict and cooperation have been co-existing between the two.

In ‘The Great Transformation of US-China Relations and China’s Strategic Response,’ the author argues that the intensifying US-China strategic competition will bring heavy burden to Korea’s foreign policy by creating a new geopolitical fault line on the Korean Peninsula. It emphasizes that it is time for Korea to set a direction regarding policy and diplomatic stance with China.
