An Interview with Jeong Daehee, Director of KDI’s Office of Global Economy

An Interview with Jeong Daehee
Director of KDI’s Office of Global Economy

Jeong Daehee, head of the KDI Global Economy Office, said in the 『KDI Global Economic Review』, which was published after two years of preparation, that many people will be interested in discussing international issues centered on international organizations such as the G20.

"In the major 20 countries (G20), we create important agendas, and with the support of many countries, we embody these agendas. The process of creating actual international norms is systematized, and when there are international rules that can affect Korea, I would like to introduce handy information such as measures to respond at the initial practical level."

Jeong Daehee, head of the KDI Global Economy Office, said in the 『 Global Economic Review』, which was published after two years of preparation, that many people will be interested in discussing international issues centered on international organizations such as the G20.

The KDI Global Economic Research Division recently launched the 『 Global Economic Review』, which analyzes global economic policy trends and provides examples. The review aims to identify a wide range of economic and policy discussions and improve public understanding of global agendas. It consists of three parts: policy trends that summarize the G20 Central Bank Governors' agenda, current analysis of global economic policy issues, and policy briefs that summarize major countries' policy cases.

The birth of the
Global Economic Review is also in line with the establishment of the KDI's Office of Global Economy. The office was established after the 2010 Seoul G20 Summit. "Those who attended international meetings or were in international organizations at the time remember that the G20 summit served as an opportunity for Korea to take a proper step on the international stage," Jeong said.

"The Office of Global Economy is the KDI's most external policy department and was created with the intention that Korea should research and present strategies to explain Korea's position rather than unilaterally following international discussions," he said.

There were also many twists and turns in the initial process of developing the Global Economic Review. Since global issues are diverse and wide-ranging, selecting a subject was a challenge. Jeong recalled, "International issues are interested in and come to mind, but there were too many issues such as trade, investment-related measures, development of emerging countries, and WTO issues." "I decided that the person who did macro-research could not know all of these things, so I thought I should focus on professional areas, so I focused on the G20 financial track," he said. "As KDI's studies are focused on domestic issues, I will support that."

In addition, the goal is to create papers that can be easily understood by the general public, even if they have not deeply studied economics. He has also shown enthusiasm for the topics he will cover in the future. He plans to address climate-related issues, regulatory strengthening of financial institutions related to ESG, and regulatory situations related to cryptocurrency or stablecoins, which are in the early stages of discussion. Director Jeong emphasized, "There are many international issues that do not have enough data at the moment, and rather than heavy analytical papers, we will deliver interesting issues and suggest implications."
