  • KDI Review of the North Korean Economy, December 2021
  • Date December 30, 2021
  • Language Korean
PDF
North Korea started with obvious advantages such as abundant natural resources and industrial infrastructures, but failed to maintain economic self-reliance that it had in its inception. 'Trends and Analysis' compares the two Korea regarding the structural changes in economy, trade, and logistics and shows that the North Korean economy is inland-oriented and China-dependent. It emphasizes that for a sustainable future of the Korean peninsula amid the rapidly changing international situation, there should be a new logistics system that enables economic growth in North Korea and a sustainable connection between the two Koreas. In particular, a multimodal logistics that connects ports and railways will greatly contribute to disseminating economic development at a local level, which could play an important role in creating a sustainable, eco-friendly territorial space at a similar level between the two Koreas. This December issue introduces the perspectives and issues of interest of young researchers who are making significant achievements using various latest techniques and data in new research fields, and examines the current state of the North Korean economy in the 10th year of the Kim Jong-un era.
