This paper examines the implications of new regionalism for
global trade from the standpoint of East Asia, with focus on the
role East Asia my ply in the evolution of the global trading
system, Section 1 analyzes the implications of new regionalism
for East Asia, with the conclusion that whether regionalism will
contribute to growth of global trade depends on the strength of
the multilateral trading system, Section 2 reviews the prospect
of the multilateral trading system, deriving a rather pessimistic
conclusion, Section 3 discusses whether the East Asian
economies themselves should or are likely to form or join a
trading bloc. Section 4 concludes the paper with discussion of
the role East Asia may play in the promotion of globalism.
