요약 This book presents the results of a two-year effort by a
group of Korean and American social scientist to explore the
impact on the Republic of Korea's population growth and
distribution of its unique development experience. It is part of
broader study of Korea's modernization, organised as a
collaborative undertaking by the Korea Development Institute and
the Harvard Institute for International Development, The overall
research program includes a dozen research monographs covering
individual sectors, and an integrative study which assesses the
consequences of Korea's development strategy, and the
contribution of importance policy directions and programs.

Demographic change has been conspicuous in the process of
Korea's modernization , in the form both of large migratory
movements which habe permitted the rapid structural
transformation of the economy, and of rapid fertility and
mortality transition which has greatly influenced household
consumption patterns and labor supply. The interaction of
demographic and socio-economic transformation is one of the
most significant aspect of Korea's development history.
