요약 The results of the analysis of the formation of family size
and family planning practice can b대 summarized as follows :

1. We first examined whether desired family size is
consistent over time and is independent of actual family
size. The results suggest that among respondents giving
definite answers the desired size is consistent and for the
sample as a whole is reasonably independent of actual
family size.

2. Analysis of the determinants of desired or actual family
size or of difference between the two suggests that family
size depends largely on the socio-economic characteristics
and the economic behavior of individual women, indicated
by such variables as age, education, educational aspirations
for children, and, in the case of excess fertility, labor
market earnings.

3. Family planning practice depends largely on the level of
excess fertility and child mortality which is directly related
to the attainment of desired family size. This shows that
family planning practice helps in the attainment of desired
family size.

The following results were obtained from the analysis of the
impact of excess fertility on the economic activity or women.

1. Limiting the sample to those women who desire three
children, those with excess actual fertility made up 45.5
percent. Two-way cross-tabulations show that excess
fertility results in higher labor market activity but lower
educational aspirations for children.

2. In order to reduce th heterogeneity of sample due to the
age differential, the sample was further restricted to
women age 35 to 45 only. In this sub-sample the
proportion of women with excess actual fertility stood at
69.0%. No substantial changes from the above results were
found in the relationship between excess fertility and the
economic activity of women

3. However, regression analysis, which controls for diverse
socio-economic characteristics among different fertility
groups, suggests that the significant effect of excess
fertility is limited to educational aspirations only.
