The US-China trade war, with a race for global economic hegemony in the background, has significantly increased global economic uncertainty since 2018. It is expected that the uncertainty faced by the economies and businesses of various countries will persist for a considerable while, as highly restrictive trade measures are being introduced and announced even at this moment. Particularly, this trade war is intertwined with nationalistic industrial policies and regulations aimed at securing leadership in high-end technologies, as well as promoting domestic industries, which raises concerns about the “fragmentation” of the global economy.

The US-China trade war and the resulting increase in global economic uncertainty are having a significant impact not only on the two countries involved but also on third countries such as South Korea, Japan, and East Asian countries. Companies in high-end technology sectors, especially those with strong trade links to the US and China, are being required to make substantial revisions to their business strategies. These revisions include reconfiguring supply chains, adjusting production locations for final goods and intermediate inputs, and diversifying export markets. The ability to appropriately respond to these changes may determine the performance of companies as well as the economy as a whole.

In light of this, the KDI Journal of Economic Policy (KDI JEP) and KDI have organized a forum inviting domestic and international experts to discuss the impacts of the US-China trade war and the resulting economic uncertainty on the trade networks, corporate supply chains, investments, and labor markets of East Asian countries, including South Korea. Based on these discussions, we aim to explore policy directions for addressing these challenges.
