KDI Review of the North Korean Economy for September presents
, discussion summary of the North Korean Economic Research Forum, and one trend analysis article.
When the outside world studies the North Korean economy, the most basic task is to figure out the size of the North Korean economy and to analyze its trends. However, North Korea has not produced enough data on its GDP or GNI. So, many institutions and researchers, including the Bank of Korea, generate their own estimates on North Korea’s economic statistics and growth rates for various analyses. Given the lack of official data provided by North Korea itself, these estimates including GDP from third parties have been naturally the subject of continuous disputes. Questions remain unanswered about the accuracy of these information and estimates. In this context, the KDI Office of the North Korean Economics Studies held the session,, under the title “North Korea’s GDP: Characteristics and Issues.”
The ongoing conflicts between the US and China pose many challenges and tasks to Korea. October issue presents ideas and insights discussed at the North Korean Economic Research Forum on October 16, held under the theme, “China's strategy toward the United States and the Korean Peninsula,” with experts in the fields of China’s politics, diplomacy, and security. This was conducted as a follow-up of the preceding forum last August in which experts on the US issues discussed on the US’s strategy towards China.
In ‘Disaster and Management Situation in North Korea,’ the contributor focuses on current situation and characteristics of recent disasters that occurred in North Korea, legal systems and organizations in charge of disaster management, and relevant policy changes by period. He also discusses about future direction of inter-Korea cooperation on disaster-related challenges.
