Other Research Industrial Policies of Korea and the Republic of China (Papers and Discussions from the 1988 Joint KDI/CHIER Conference, February 8-9, 1988) February 08, 1988
Series No. 89-01
February 08, 1988
- Summary
-
As rapidly industrializing economies in Asia sharing similar
records of economic development and facing common economic
policy challenges, the Republic of Korea and the Republic of
China habe much to gain from comparing notes. This premise
underpins the Joint Conferences on the Industrial Policies of the
Republic of Korea and the Republic of China, held annually by
the Korea Development Institute and the Chung-Hua Institution
for Economic Research. This volume contains papers and
discussions form the fourth in this annual series, held February
8-9, 1088 at the Korea Development Institute in Seoul, Korea.
The 1988 conference centered on several policy areas which
habe merged as particularly pressing issues in recent times:
import liberalization, internationalization of financial markets, and
foreign direct investment and technology transfer. Both Korea
and Taiwan are moving forward with policy reforms in these
areas as calls from the international economic community for
greater economic integration mount and as both nations
continues their efforts to achieve greater economic maturity.
For two countries sharing common economic policy goals bu
t with often divergent experiences and points of reference,
presentations and discussions of the kind summarized in the
pages that follow are especially instructive and edifying,
providing guidance for future policy research as well as practical
assistance for government policymakers. In what has become an
increasingly uncertain and rapidly changing international
environment, such cooperation and information exchange will be
increasingly invaluable if successful structural adjustment is to
be realized.
It is hoped that this collection of research articles,
comments, and discussions by leading experts in Taiwan and
Korea will meaningfully contribute to the economic literature on
these two emerging nations. As the economies of Taiwan and
Korea become increasingly complex, economic policymakers will
have to respond with greater sophistication and sensitivity. This
conference represents the kind of dialogue essential to meeting
that challenge.
