Labor Market Expert Meeting
with French Embassy in South Korea

On July 13th, the Economic and Trade Representative Office of the French Embassy in South Korea visited the Korea Development Institute (KDI) for a meeting with labor market experts.
The delegation, composed of Mr. Secou Aidara, and Mrs. Jina Ahn, Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs, visited KDI to gather insights from experts in various fields for their ongoing report on the Korean labor market.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Joseph Han, Head of the Labor Market Research Team at KDI, and
Dr. Dohun Kim and Dr. MinSub Kim, Research Fellows in the Department of Public Finance and Social Policy at KDI. They shared their expert opinions on several topics during the meeting.
In this expert meeting:
They examined the current state of the pension system in Korea, considering the challenges and alternative solutions anticipated in the context of an aging society. They also discussed efforts being made to address wage inequality and the necessary legal and institutional measures. Moreover, they exchanged views on issues such as career interruptions for women, the low representation of women in senior positions, and the changing perceptions and environment surrounding these issues.
The meeting also delved into the measures required to enhance productivity in the service sector, given the imbalance between education supply and labor market demand. Furthermore, they shared their insights on the causes of youth unemployment and discussed institutional mechanisms to encourage sustained economic participation.
Overall, this meeting provided a valuable opportunity to contemplate and exchange opinions on various social issues that require extensive research, discussion, and refinement. It helped in understanding the concerns and direction of the French government, making it a meaningful and insightful occasion.
