Presentation 1. The Candlelight Revolution and the Moon Jae-in Government’s Democracy Paradigm
JEONG Sang Ho Professor, Seowon University
□ In the 1st anniversary of the inauguration of the Moon Jae-in government, the Candlelight Struggle, the social engine that launched the Moon Jae-in government, will be evaluated from a comparative social movement perspective, and the new paradigm for democracy will be analyzed.
○ The similarities and differences between the 2016-17 candlelight movement and former candlelight movements will be examined: the U.S. armored vehicle accident to two Korean teenagers in 2002, President Roh Moo-hyun’s impeachment in 2004, and rising concerns about mad cow disease over the import of U.S. beef in 2008.
○ The background, participants and purpose of the Candlelight Struggle will be analyzed in relation to the current MeToo movement, the Korean Air Lines incident (‘gap-jil’), and the two Korea’s peace agreement issue.
□ The presentation discusses whether “popular sovereignty”, which the Moon Jae-in government is promoting, is bringing a paradigm shift in democracy.
○ Defining Moon Jae-in government’s democracy as “popular sovereignty,” the presentation discusses what constitutes the paradigm shift of democracy and whether “popular sovereignty” falls under the paradigm shift.
○ Furthermore, the presentation addresses the challenges that need to be identified and prepared for early settlement or successful transition of the paradigm.
